Pet Therapy
The Benefits of Pet Therapy
Pet therapy is becoming more and more popular. This is because pets and animals may put people at ease, reduce their stress and make them feel more comfortable talking through their problems. Pet therapy is the interaction between a pet and a person that is overseen by the animal's handler and a therapist. These animals are properly trained before participating in therapy so you know that they are friendly and safe. Typically dogs or cats are used in therapy but there have been other animals used, including horses.
There are many benefits of pet therapy. Some of the benefits include reducing anxiety, which helps you calm down, and a decrease in loneliness by giving you a companion. This type of therapy is very beneficial for individuals with disabilities because they can communicate easier with animals. Pet therapy can also reduce boredom by having a pet there to play with, talk to and nurture. Pet therapy has also been known to be good for children. It helps children learn empathy and nurturing skills. Some of the other benefits of pet therapy are improving motor skills by running around and playing with a pet, playing catch or petting them. Some people will show less anxiety and will be more motivated to recover from medical procedures or surgery if they have a pet present. You and your therapist will set a goal or goals at the start of your treatment that you will work towards.
